  1. Instead of deleting all your icons (on windows at least) you could leave stuff on there as a kind of staging ground for your launchy. I have a few text files I access regularly that I made shortcuts to on the desktop and I can access them quickly from launchy without reconfiguring directories to scan. Simply hiding the icons as you say in step 2 is enough imo.

I suggest you a better option is to use Stardock Fency... it organize the icons into container groups and if you double click over your desktop then you will have all the icons hidden, which is more practical than having your icons removed... I have tons of tips to share with you I will try to have a talk someday so we can exchange ideas like this :)
