Editing the program menus directly from the start menu can be very annoying when it closes constantly on you after deleting or moving items (on windows). It can be easier to edit them using the file browser. Right click a program folder and select explore. You can then navigate up to the "Start menu" folder and begin exploring and removing unwanted items. The only downside is that some programs may be installed on your account, while others may be installed for 'all users'. These will be in different folders.
You're absolutely right - that's a more efficient way of doing it(did it that way myself). However, I decided to use the other method in the post, just because its a bit more straightforward.
