ultralight packing

I learned about ultralight packing two months ago, and it has completely changed the way I travel. I used to be a huge “just in case" packer. Half of what I brought never even came out of my backpack! Carrying everything was frustrating and trying to find stuff during the trip was time consuming.

Since then, I've started taking only what I need. Although needs vary from person to person, the basics are similar. Here's what ultralight packing looks like for me.

1 t-shirt
1 skirt
2 pairs of underwear
1 pair of socks
toothbrush
deodorant
toothpaste
contact solution
glasses
mp3 player
money
1 pair of pajama pants
razor
wearing: clothes + silver earrings

Note: you can take less clothing if you choose pieces that go with everything. Instead of having seven separate outfits, put together three that can be swapped around and worn multiple times. It's okay to wear the same thing twice. You'd be surprised at how many people even notice. Same thing goes for shoes and jewelry.

Some people can get by with a lot less, while others have to take much more. Just focus on your needs. Make a list of everything you couldn’t do without, then try narrowing it down even further. More tips here.

  1. So true! I was the same way. Thankfully, I've learned to trim it down somewhat. Now I'll be working on it even more =)Life is too short to waste time with clutter.

  2. Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers?

I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked hard on.
    Any suggestions?

  3. Hi Sarah,

This is really interesting, do you feel you could live on that amount of clothes for a longer period of time? If not, how would you adjust your current list to allow for say a month or two away?

  4. Hi Jason,

Yes, definitely. The longest I've gone with this amount is two weeks, but I could easily have stretched them for another two. However, if I knew I was going to be away for a month or longer, I think I would pack an extra t-shirt and pair of socks. Unless I was really limited on space.
